CBI raids top armyman for graft in ration procurement

Sharma took bribes from contractors who supplied rations to the Army.

Just two years after a retired general was court-martialled and sent to prison for irregularities in procurement of rations in J&K,ration supplies to soldiers has again come under the scanner.

The CBI has raided residences of Major General V K Sharma,former head of Army Supply Corps in the northern sector who is attached with Northern Command headquarters,in Delhi,Gurgaon,Pathankote and Udhampur and reportedly seized records of unaccounted properties,cash and gold. The CBI has also frozen some of his bank accounts,said CBI SP Armandeep Singh. He will be questioned after the CBI scrutinises the seized records.

Sharma allegedly took bribes from contractors who supplied rations to the Army and amassed illegal wealth,much of which he appeared to have invested in realty and gold,a CBI official said.

The raids came after the CBI took over the probe from the Army,which had probed Sharma and initiated action against him last year. He was also accused by contractors of demanding commission in allotment of contracts.

In 2011,retired Lt General S K Sahni was court-martialled and sentenced to three years in prison for procuring rotten rations for soldiers deployed at Siachen when he was Director General Supplies and Transport.
