Chanda Kochhar,Ekta Kapoor on Forbes’ power list

The list names 50 “pathbreakers” whose extraordinary business success is driving the region’s remarkable economic rise,Forbes said.

ICICI Bank CEO and MD Chanda Kochhar,Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and film producer Ekta Kapoor are among the nine Indian women named in Forbes magazine’s inaugural ‘Asia Power Businesswomen list’.

The list names 50 “pathbreakers” whose extraordinary business success is driving the region’s remarkable economic rise,Forbes said.

“Although the role of women in Asia-Pacific’s economy is growing,most of these honorees still have had to overcome significant barriers to get where they are today,” it said,adding the business success of the 50 women on its list is a combination of capital,ideas,energy and leadership.

The list also includes Britannia Industries MD Vinita Bali,HT Media chairman and editorial director Shobhana Bhartia,AZB & Partners founder and senior partner Zia Mody,Axis Bank CEO and MD Shikha Sharma and Tractors & Farm Equipment chairman Mallika Srinivasan.

Exports up by over 10% in January

New Delhi: India’s exports surged over 10 per cent to $25.4 billion during January,higher than the 7 per cent rise clocked in the previous month.

Imports,however,grew much faster by over 20 per cent to $40.1 billion during the month,mainly on account of surging value of vegetable oil,fertilisers and coal imports.

The resultant trade deficit — gap between exports and imports — jumped to a three-month high of $14.7 billion during January.

The exports growth rate was a marginal increase over December 2011 when it grew by by 6.7 per cent year-on-year.
