Glimpses of goofiness and fun from a fest of clowns in Mumbai

Happiness is made of this: a red nose,a white mouth, and a flamboyant orange wig. A clown, that is. At the five-day International Clown Fest held in Mumbai recently, the audience went away with bagfuls of laughs.

The troupe consisted of clowns from all over the world, including Canada,USA and Malaysia, who were brought together by Mumbai-based Martin D’Souza, who regularly performs as Flubber the Clown and is also an event manager. The happy characters came in three types — whiteface, auguste and character clowns. The first is a pleasant-looking clown with,as the name suggests,a face that may well have been whitewashed,a big red smile, decent manners and often a bossy demeanour. The auguste clown is the most exaggerated of the lot,a prankster in a costume that deliberately doesn’t fit. The last, the character clown, depicts a specific character or an

occupation,be it a doctor, policeman or a Rodeo Clown. Their performances include tight-rope walks, theatre shows, pantomime, unicycling, juggling, gags, balloon shows and everything else that will make an audience giggle with joy.
