CPM objects to Bengal Speaker order

The CPM has objected to a circular issued by the West Bengal Assembly Speaker banning media conferences in the press room of the House when there is no session

The CPM has objected to a circular issued by the West Bengal Assembly Speaker on Friday banning media conferences in the press room of the House when there is no session.

So far no permission has been required from the Speaker to hold press conferences during Assembly sessions. When the session is not on,the Speaker’s nod is needed.

“The move is unconstitutional and unjust. They want to trample democracy. We will not tolerate it,” CPM’s Shymal Chakrabarti said.

TMC defended the move, saying it would help the Assembly run better. “It is the inhabitants of the House who decide how it will be run. It was former Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim who banished TV cameras from Assembly premises,” Madan Mitra,Minister for Transport and Sports, said.
