Extend House session to pass Bill,Maya tells govt

If the central government really wants the Bill to be passed,it should ensure smooth functioning of the House

A day before the end of the monsoon session of Parliament,BSP supremo Mayawati on Thursday demanded that the government should extend the session for passing the Constitution Amendment Bill that seeks to provide for reservation in promotion in government services for SC/STs.

“If the central government really wants the Bill to be passed,it should ensure smooth functioning of the House. It should find a middle path on the coal issue to end the disruptions caused by BJP and its allies as coal scam too is no less important,” Mayawati said in a statement, demanding the government to extend the session by 10 to 12 days,if necessary,to pass the Bill.

Charging the Congress for playing a “double game”,the BSP chief put the onus on the government to find a middle path for facilitating the passage of the Bill. “The Centre should find a way for peaceful conduct of business in the Rajya Sabha by controlling people who are opposed to the measure,” she said.

Pitching itself strongly against quota for SCs and STs in promotions, the Shiv Sena Thursday cautioned against violence over the issue.

“Aarakshan se desh jalega, desh jalega, desh jalega,” the Shiv Sena members shouted in Parliament THursday.

“We are opposed to the very idea of reservations on the basis of caste or religion,” Sena leader Sanjay Raut said. “This Bill is against merit,” he said, and “such reservations would lead to a state of anarchy in bureaucracy and have disastrous consequences for the country.”
