An important 1988 oil on canvas “Falling figure with Bird” estimated at Rs 8,10,00,000- Rs 10,80,00,000 by modern master Tyeb Mehta along with an extremely rare 1930s painting by Amrita Sher-Gil are leading Saffronart’s online Autumn Art auction on September 19-20.
Mehta’s canvas is one of the most important paintings from his suite of falling figures and the artist draws on both Indian and Western myths and legends
This year,Amrita Sher-Gil’s 1931 “Untitled (Zebegeny Landscape)” canvas is estimated between Rs 3,24,00,000 to Rs 4,32,00,000. It is one of only five paintings by the artist to have ever come up for public auction.
Of the artist’s 172 documented paintings,95 are in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art,New Delhi while two other paintings are in institutional collections in Chandigarh and Lahore.
The 2012 Saffronart autum auction has 75 lots by 35 modern and contemporary Indian artists with a total estimate of Rs 21.78 crore to Rs 28.6 crore.

A work by Arpita Singh,whose monumental painting “Wish Dream” fetched an record USD 2.24 million in Saffronart’s 2010 Winter Art Auction making it the highest ever price achieved by an Indian woman artist globally,is also included in the upcoming auction.
Arpita’s 2003 canvas “Summer Months”,is estimated between Rs 81,00,000 to Rs 97,20,000. Meanwhile “Indra’s Net(6)” executed by Bharti Kher in the year 2007 is priced between Rs 37,80,000 to Rs 48,60,000.
A selection of modern paintings by M F Husain,V S Gaitonde and F N Souza,along with important contemporary artworks by Sudhir Patwardhan,Atul Dodiya and Jitish Kallat are also included in the auction.
