Garments exports dip 14 pct in Jan

Apparel exports declined by about 14 per cent to USD 862 million in January 2010,indicating continuation of weak demand for Indian garments in major markets like the US and Europe.

Garments exports stood at USD 998.31 million in January 2009.

During April-January 2009-10,garments exports stood at USD 7.91 billion compared to USD 8.81 billion in the same period previous fiscal,according to the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) estimates.

The sector,which employs 3.65 million people,is expected to close the current fiscal with a drop of 10 per cent exports.
