The political wrangling between the government and the Opposition Unified Communist party of Nepal-Maoists (UCPN-M) took a new turn on Saturday with Prime Minister Madhav Nepal asserting that he will not step down.
Madhav Nepals categorical assertion comes as Maoists lobby hard to get him out stating him to be the only condition for not supporting to the constitutional amendment bill for extending the tenure of the Constituent Assembly that will cease to exist after May 28.
The Nepali Congress the largest ally to the coalition government and other key partners continued to put pressure on the Prime Minister not to buckle under pressure from the Maoists.
There will be no constitutional crisis in the country even if the deadline for delivering the constitution is not met. The interim constitution, the President and the present Council of Ministers will continue to exist and function, said Shankar Pokharel,Information Minister and government spokesperson.
We will not support the proposal for extending the life of the House under the existing political circumstances. For that, the Prime Minister must resign and a national unity government formed, said Narayankaji Shrestha Prakash,vice-president of the UCPN-M.
Meanwhile,Nepali Congress working president Sishil Koirala on Saturday told UCPN-M chairman Prachanda that the Maoists will have to transform into a civilian party before demanding the Prime Ministers resignation. That Madhav Nepal should not resign under the existing circumstances is our clear official position, said Koirala after an jour-long meeting with Prachanda in the morning.
I am doing my job the right way,and with all the right intent. I will not quit, but I will not be an obstacle to anyone seeking a national unity government, Nepal said addressing a meet of the Youth Force,a youth wing of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML),the party he belongs to.
