Former Union minister George Fernandes’s wife,Leila Kabir, and his brothers have been fighting a legal battle over his treatment and interaction with relatives. On Wednesday, they were advised by the Delhi High Court to resolve the issue amicably.

Expressing concerns over the health conditions of the 79-year-old Socialist leader, the court told his wife and brothers that it was ready to take “extra steps” to help them find an acceptable solution. Directing them to inform the court on Thursday about the result of their discussion,Justice V K Shali underlined the importance of the relationship between Fernandes and his wife and said the relationship between a couple is placed at a pedestal higher than that between brothers.

Justice Shali observed: “It is more like a social problem. I am finding the issue a little difficult to comprehend. If there is willingness from both the sides, the court is willing to take extra steps to help you resolve the problem. It is better that you sit and talk. It is a human problem more than a legal issue.”

The court’s remarks came as the counsel appearing for Richard Fernandes contended that Leila was living separately for decades and the relationship was estranged. His counsel moved an application with a prayer seeking “unfettered access” to his brother and also for the appointment of a medical board to ascertain his health conditions. Accusing Leila of coming back in Fernandes’s life only for monetary gains, the brothers said Fernandes was being kept away from the people he was familiar with. Leila’s advocate countered all the allegations.
