HOW TO WEAR A DRINK AND SIP ON A CITY

Varun Bahl created a Grey Goose inspired collection for the 13th edition of IIFA Awards in Singapore.

Ask designer Varun Bahl

Varun Bahl, one of India’s talented couturiers created a Grey Goose inspired collection for the 13th edition of IIFA Awards in Singapore. Bahl who hasn’t really got his due as a designer is a man lost in translation. Some of his couture collections have been provocative and inspiring, his choice and use of colours and surface ornamentation very interesting, very radical. Yet,he has been stumbling,he he isn’t among the first few names you will necessarily remember when you say Indian couture. For his menswear pret, partnering with Karan Johar may be a brilliant marketing strategy (or is it?) but it doesn’t do anything for fashion really.

This collection shown at IIFA pushes Bahl further towards the debit side. Not because it is short on style or showstopper appeal, but because it is such an unoriginal initiative to create garments to suit a booze sponsor’s merchandise—in this case an array of Vodka varieties. Sample some: Grey Goose Spice, inspired by Mumbai; Lavender Bliss inspired by Tokyo,Amour inspired by Paris and Fiesta Espanola inspired by Madrid.
