IIM-A to offer elective course on theatre

The Indian Institute of Management,Ahmedabad (IIM-A) will from February offer an elective course on theatre to “understand oppression” using participatory theatre

The Indian Institute of Management,Ahmedabad (IIM-A) will from February offer an elective course on theatre to “understand oppression” using participatory theatre,for which several thespians have already been arranged to conduct classes.

According to the course outline,the core objectives are to “add to the skill set of future managers by developing communicative strategies in group,teamwork… based on the lived experiences of team members,privileging the development of collective goals and shared values,and the capacity for empathetic leadership”.

The course has been introduced by the IIM-A’s Public Systems Group with an intake of 20 participants. Classes will be conducted at IIM-A as well as Budhan Theatre in Chhara Nagar,Ahmedabad.

Besides IIM-A faculty,co-instructors and facilitators for the course will include Budhan Theatre Team,Ahmedabad; Pranab Mukherjee of the Best of Campus Theatre,Kolkata; and Prabir Bose and Anju Uppal from Media Matters Theatre Group.

Faculty members say the course will not require any prerequisites in terms of courses or prior experience with theatrical forms,and that the assessment would include a short paper (30 per cent),a diary of participatory process (40 per cent) and technique performance (30 per cent).

The courses’ outcome would be a set of performances using dramatics,photography,video,audio,painting,poetry and other forms of expression chosen by the participant groups,and theses would be performed at the end of the course at both IIMA and Chharanagar,according to the course outline.
