IIT entrants to be severely hit

The 325 candidates shortlisted this year following the Joint Entrance Examination for admission to IITs under the 4.5 per cent minority sub-quota

The 325 candidates shortlisted this year following the Joint Entrance Examination for admission to IITs under the 4.5 per cent minority sub-quota within the 27 per cent quota for OBCs will be seriously affected following the Supreme Court refusal to stay a high court order quashing the sub-quota.

With the sub-quota now merging back into the OBC quota, the 325 minority candidates — mostly Muslims — may now lose their chance to enter the IITs. It also means that OBC quota students — numbering over 4,800 — who ranked too low to secure an IIT berth earlier will stand a better chance now with

the 443 minority quota seats being added to the total quota.

“The possibility of the 325 finding a berth at IITs now depends solely on their rank as seen in context of the OBC quota list. The 4.5 per cent quota is null and void as far as JEE 2012 is concerned,” Prof G B Reddy, the JEE Chairman, told The Indian Express.

The HRD Ministry will be asking all central educational institutes to put on hold the minority sub-quota during their admission process, now underway in almost all institutes. The IITs were the first of these institutes to have implemented the 4.5 per cent sub-quota this academic year.
