India,EU hope to conclude FTA soon

India is the 10th largest trading partner for the 27-nation bloc.

India and the European Union hope to conclude the free trade agreement well in time for their summit meeting scheduled to be held here in December.

The EU is India’s largest trading partner,while India is the 10th largest trading partner for the 27-nation bloc and the India-Europe FTA could help put the commericial ties between the two continents on a faster track.

The issue figured in the meeting Vice President Hamid Ansari had on Monday with European Council President Herman von Rompuy.

“Negotiations are progressing well. Better than before. There is a spirit of optimism,” Latha Reddy,Secretary (East),Ministry of External Affairs told reporters here.

She said Ansari and von Rompuy reviewed the bilateral ties between India and the European Union.

Ansari also met Finland Prime Minister Mari Kiviniemi who welcomed Indian investments in clean energy,ICT,forests and education sectors.

Ansari also met Latvian President Valdis Zatlers who informed him about the programmes being organised in his country to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
