Acknowledging that the people would not tolerate the current state of affairs, the Prime Minister today pledged swift and exemplary action to deal with corruption.
There is a growing feeling among the people that our laws, systems and procedures are not effective in dealing with corruption, he said, adding,We must recognise that there is little public tolerance now for the prevailing state of affairs. People expect swift and exemplary action and rightly so.
Addressing IAS,IFS,IPS and other senior bureaucrats at the inauguration of Civil Services Day,Manmohan Singh said the government hoped to introduce the Lokpal Bill in the monsoon session. The governments aim,he said, was to strengthen the legislative framework, revamp administrative practices and fast-track systemic response.
The government is also committed to bringing more transparency in public procurement and to ensuring that disinvestment of public utilities and allocation of public resources are done in a manner that best safeguards the interests of the asset-owning public,he said.
Singh recalled his statement that corruption was an impediment to growth and hurt the poor. It is a challenge that we must tackle boldly and stand committed to doing so.
The PM also mentioned the joint drafting committee at work on the Lokpal Bill, and the two Bills on judicial accountability and protection of whistleblowers that have been introduced in Parliament. The government would soon ratify the UN Convention on Corruption,he said.
