A Pakistani national from the countrys northwest was arrested at the Karachi airport after the police found electrical circuits and batteries in his shoes. The man was about to board a flight for the Muscat by Thai Airways.
The man,identified as Faiz Muhammad,was arrested on Sunday after the scanners sounded an alarm,police said. They said the 30-year-old civil engineer is being interrogated by the police to find out whether he has links to terror outfits.
The man told the police that the electrical system inside his shoes was actually a foot massager which he used while walking and traveling.
He had sophisticated electronic circuits hidden inside his shoes that could be used to create and detonate explosive material, an official said. He said that the man,who belongs to Manshera in the North West Frontier Province was a civil engineer and was being interrogated by the ASF and intelligence officials.
Mondays incident comes a week after US agents arrested Pakistani-American Faisal Shahzad for an alleged car bombing attempt in New Yorks Times Square.
The US has ruled out conducting racial profiling as an anti-terror measure in the aftermath of the failed Times Square bombing incident,arguing that it is not a helpful law enforcement measure.
I dont think that profiling is good law enforcement, US Attorney General Eric Holder told the NBC news channel when asked if US would go for racial profiling of Pakistani-Americans in view of the Times Square incident.
His statement came amid reports that some Pakistani Americans were posing as Indians following the Times Square incident to avert a backlash.
