BJP MP from Aonla Maneka Gandhi on Sunday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying she was concerned about her sons safety, especially after the arrest of seven members of an underworld outfit headed by anti-India gangster Chota Shakeel, who were found to have been plotting to assassinate her son and members of his legal team.
The letter claimed that the Home Ministry has taken threats to her son casually. While I appreciate the efficiency of the police in catching these assassins,I am amazed at the lackadaisical attitude of your government. The Home Ministry has taken these threats casually,so lightly that Im appalled. When Varun met the Home Minister, the latter was so arrogant and careless of his duties that he simply informed him that he could not protect everyone in the country. It is as if you want Varun Gandhi to be killed, said the BJP MP in her letter to the PM.
Maneka further claimed in her letter that because he seems to be a political threat to you and your party,he is constantly and consistently attacked using all weapons at your command. I find it bizarre that we have never been informed of any attempts or even been advised on any security precautions. We simply learn of these attempts through the media, Maneka said, adding that she had spoken to the Delhi Police Commissioner who had refused to confirm that Varun was the target.
Varun, meanwhile, invoked the name of his grandmother Indira Gandhi in a separate release issued to the Press. In spite of a ruthless campaign to target me,I shall,as an elected representative of the people, continue to promote the interests of my constituency. Smt Indira Gandhi had expressed the hope that her every drop of blood should reinvigorate the nation. I am willing to give my life for a strong and self-reliant India.
Ironical: Cong on Maneka letter
New Delhi: Reacting to BJP leader Maneka Gandhis letter to the Prime Minister about security threat to her son Varun Gandhi, the Congress on Sunday termed it ironical. It is indeed ironical that those who gratuitously make provocative statements on the extreme generating instability, rancour and divisiveness in the whole country are now clamouring for protection. Nevertheless,Mrs Maneka Gandhi and Mr Varun Gandhi may rest assured that the Congress-led UPA government, unlike them,is committed to protecting the lives, liberty and property of every citizen in a non-discriminatory manner, AICC spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.
