Soaring of price is mainly attributed to increase in cost of production,Mahant added.

The minister denied that total number of milch animals in India has declined in the last five years.

He said that as per a study conducted by NABARD Consultancy Services (NABCONS) in 2007-08,availability of green fodder was 64 per cent of the demand in the country.

Mahant said there was no report with the department on the effect on milk production due to shortage of green and qualitative fodder in the country.
