NTPC-BHEL joint venture,NBPPL,will be set up at Mannavaram in Andhra Pradesh.

The power equipment manufacturing plant of the NTPC-BHEL joint venture,NBPPL,will be set up at Mannavaram in Andhra Pradesh and entail an investment of Rs 6,000 crore.

The plant, which is slated to be fully operational by 2014,will have an annual capacity to manufacture up to 5,000 Mega Watt of equipment. It is billed as the country’s first integrated plant making turbines, generators and boilers at one place.

“The integrated plant, which will have capacity to manufacture up to 5,000 MW of power equipment annually, will come up in Mannavaram in Chitoor district of Andhra Pradesh, about 120 km from Chennai,” NBPPL Chairman and Managing Director C P Singh said in a statement on Thursday.

“This will be the first integrated plant in the country to manufacture turbines, generators and boilers under one roof…,” Singh added.

The Andhra Pradesh government had allotted 750 acres last month for the project.

NTPC-BHEL Power Projects Private Ltd said that the funding of the Rs 6,000 crore project will have debt-equity ratio of 1:1,or in equal proportion.

The JV will also execute power projects and BHEL has already placed orders on NBPPL for the two plants it is setting up — a 726 MW gas based power project for ONGC Tripura Company Ltd and 100 MW power plant for Assam Power Generating Company Ltd.

The company said the JV would focus on making power equipment to bridge the demand and supply gap. At present,BHEL has a capacity to manufacture up to 10,000 MW of power equipment annually.

India is looking at adding power generation capacity of over 78,000 MW by 2012,which is expected to lead to a huge requirement of equipment for the sector.

NBPPL was set up as a 50:50 JV at the initiative of Power and Heavy Industries Ministries between the two state-owned Navratna companies — NTPC and BHEL. It was set up last year and constituted its full board in April 2008.
