With the US moving closer to military intervention in Syria on Saturday,India said that it supports a United Nations-led process as that is the best and only way to address conflict situations. India also advised Indians about 30 of them in Syria to leave the country.
The UN Security Council members have been divided so far on military intervention. Only the US has made its intentions clear about the military strikes, while the UK has been cautioned by its Parliament. Russia is not supportive of the military strikes on Syria.
New Delhis position assumes significance as it puts India in the group of countries, which are not in support of unilateral military intervention as is being currently planned by the US.
Khurshid also said that the deaths, which have been due to chemical attacks, are completely unacceptable and extremely tragic.
Right now,we think it is an extremely complicated situation, the immediate point of concern is…whether and to what extent,(with) whose active involvement have the chemical attacks taken place, he said.
The deaths,no matter, how they come, are completely unacceptable and extremely tragic. And we have been advocating that all sides have to abjure violence. Consequences of continued violence to Syria are really unthinkable. We were hoping to see the glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, with the possibility of the Geneva-II taking place..we supported that, the minister said.
Beyond expressing our dismay and distress on the continuing situation,we dont think that we can be of much help right now. We hope that the manner in which serious concerns about those things which can escalate violence and possibility of the danger of that spilling over to neighbouring areas of Syria, the whole world must take seriously, he said, flagging one of Delhis main concerns about the impact on the Indians living in the Gulf region. A matter of special concern is the presence of 6.5-7 million of Indians in the region,a matter of extreme concern to us, he said.
