Non-enforcement of labour laws leads to violence: Kharge

Labour violence and unrest have hit the countrys image in recent months even as investors have shelved plans on account of a high interest rates and policy uncertainty.

The government on Thursday blamed failure in enforcement of labour laws for industrial flare-ups like the recent unrest at automaker Marutis Manesar plant and called on states to ensure their strict implementation.

Enforcement of the labour laws has to be followed strictly…Respect for industrial democracy and aiming towards high industrial growth has to go hand in hand, minister for labour and employment Mallikarjun Kharge said at the State Labour Ministers Conference.

Kharge pointed out that failure in implementing labour laws has led to the recent flaring of incidents like Maruti Suzuki in Haryana,Regency Ceramics,Yanam,Puducherry and Neyveli Lignite Limited,Tamil Nadu.

Legislation related to minimum wages,contract labour,industrial disputes and working conditions in the factories affects the life of the working class in a very significant way. These laws touch upon the lives of the most deprived and marginal classes of the society, the minister said.

Kharge also exhorted states to strengthen conciliation and enforcement machinery and to try and find solutions through consultation with all stakeholders.
