‘Not the right time to talk of merger’

I don't feel it is the right time for both the parties to put this issue on the agenda.

CPI deputy general secretary S Sudhakar Reddy, who is tipped to succeed A B Bardhan as the party top boss next year,on Thursday said it was not the “right time” to talk about merger of CPI and the CPM.

He admitted that a section of his party was skeptical about reunification and made it clear that the CPI which had been favouring the coming together of both the parties would not now make the first move.

Reddy though admitted that reunification of both the parties whenever it may happen would “help in a big way” as it would boost the confidence of the Left movement. He also underlined that ideological differences that led to division in 1964 were “irrelevant” and “outdated” now. Against this backdrop, the demand by “well-wishers” for a merger was “reasonable”,but the CPI would prefer the CPM to take the initiative.

“I don’t feel it is the right time for both the parties to put this issue on the agenda. Let the CPM and our party come out of the defeat in Bengal and analyse the consequences,” he said.
