On the Move

Farhan Akhtar attempts comedy for the first time in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

Farhan Akhtar attempts comedy for the first time in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

What is your role in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara?

I play Imran, who is a copywriter by profession and is a fun guy at heart. I enjoyed playing this character as I had to do comic scenes, something I have never attempted before. I am glad that I managed to pull it off very well. There is Hrithik Roshan who plays Arjun,a serious and career-oriented guy. Because of this nature of his,he loses out on many things in life. Abhay,as Kabir,is at a crucial phase in life. About to be married to Kalki Koechlin,he develops cold feet at the last minute. All this leads to many funny situations.

Looks like the film is about male bonding, like Dil Chahta Hai and Rock On!!

Not really, though its strong base is friendship. Dil Chahta Hai was about male bonding and centered on the conflict of the minds. Rock On!! was also about the problems of friends. Here it is about how friends go all out to enjoy life and make the most of ‘the moment’.

What is the film all about?

The film is a journey of three guys and on the way, they make you laugh and move you to tears. It was a great adventure making this film.

What was it about this film that appealed to you?

After Zoya (Akhtar) wrote and narrated the script to Ritesh (Sidhwani) and me,we thought it was a special story and decided to produce it. It has a very simple yet strong message that the most important time is now and that you are in charge of your own life.

You have worked with Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol earlier. How was it working with Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin?

It was interesting and exciting. While all of us are friends in the film,it is Katrina who joins our gang and inspires us to start thinking what we want from life. As a team,we had a good time on the sets. There is also a Spanish actress Ariadna Cabrol, who plays my love interest.

You even enjoyed some adventure sports.

We did sky-diving and scuba-diving. The most enjoyable part was the diving and underwater sequence that we shot for the film. We even shot during the festival of bullfighting and were very scared of being trampled by the bulls. But we managed to get some good shots.

We have shot all over Spain. In fact, we were on the move every third day. It was a magical time. We also shot in Egypt and Mumbai. We were a crew of 80 people shooting on 100 different locations. It was truly an adventure.

You have lent your voice for a song again after Rock On!!

In fact, all three of us,Hrithik,Abhay and I have sung Senorita and it was a great experience working under the baton of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The song is getting rave reviews.

How is Zoya to work with?

I have been meeting her everyday of my life for the last 37 years. She is the boss at home and even on the sets. But the only difference is that while working, there is an objective to achieve and complete some good work. Otherwise there has been no change in our relationship,on personal or professional levels.

What are your expectations from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara?

As a producer,I have great expectations from Zindagi…. It has a very different story and is an original concept. It is a fun film that will also be fun to watch. I am very optimistic that the general response will be good. The promos have been received well.

Besides producing and acting in the film, you have even penned the dialogues for Zindagi… . Which is your best line in the film?

It is great to see your lines coming to life on screen and Zindagi .. has many funny lines in the film. I would say it has brought out the humorous side of me but since the film is yet to release, people will not connect with the lines as yet. Of my other dialogues,I like the one from Dil Chahta Hai – Hum cake khaane ke liye kahin bhi jaa sakte hain.
