A tribal council in Pakistans southern Sindh province ordered the marriage of two minor girls to settle a dispute between two families under the controversial custom of vani,triggering protests by local residents.
A wadera or landlord named Peeral Chachar presided over the jirga that gave away the girls in marriage to settle a dispute that began when Shah Mohammad Chachar and Hayatan married against the will of their parents some months ago.
The meeting of the council was held in Rehmat Chachar village on Thursday night.
Peeral issued a directive against Shah Mohammad and Hayatan and imposed a fine of Rs 4,00,000. He also ordered that Shah Mohammads nieces Allah Diwai,10,and Sassui,6, should be given in marriage to Hayatans relatives.
Peeral forcibly solemnised the nikah or marriage of Allah Diwai with 10-year-old Shaman,a brother of Hayatan,the Dawn reported.
The landlord further decided the wedding of Sassui will be held when she turns 10.
Peeral also rejected the appeals of Allah Dino Chachar the father of the two girls and forcibly solemnised the wedding of the elder girl.
