Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has mastered the art of politely saying no,even to the most influential and powerful. Recently, the Infosys Science Foundation honoured Upinder Singh, his second daughter who is a professor of History in Delhi University. The Foundation, who has as president N R Narayana Murthy and others like Unique ID card project chairman Nandan Nilekani and Planning Commission Deputy Chairperson Montek Singh Ahluwalia as its trustees among others, was reportedly keen to hold the awards ceremony at the Prime Ministers residence. A request was not only made to the Prime Minister but he was even informally asked to make a speech at the function. To the surprise of many though,Singh made it clear that he would be doing no such thing. The Prime Ministers Office diplomatically conveyed to the organisers that 7 RCR would not play host to an award event where his own daughter was one of the recipients. The result: the event was held at Taj Palace Hotel and Prime Minister graced the occasion only as a proud father.
