Power supply to ECL mines snapped

Coal production stops in nine Eastern Coalfields Ltd mines after power shut on unpaid dues.

Coal production from nine mines of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) was stopped on Monday after power supply to the units was disconnected over alleged non-payment of dues.

Official sources said power supply from the power plants of Dishergarh Power Supply Company Limited,near Asansol,was disconnected for non-payment of bills amounting to Rs 63 crore by ECL.

All the coal mines are located in West Bengal.

Power supply was cut to the quarters of ECL employees as well.

ECL Chairman and Managing Director Rakesh Sinha said the company would move the Calcutta High Court against the disruption of power supply. “ECL had also moved against DPSC Ltd for incorrect billing and a case is already pending with ombudsman for overcharging for power they supplied us through market

purchase,” Sinha said.

DPSC officials were not available for comment.
