Forest authorities on Wednesday ordered an inquiry into the death of a female rhino two days ago at the hands of a forest guard in the world-famous Kaziranga National Park.

Kaziranga Divisional Forest Officer Dibyadhar Gogoi said the forest guard had opened fire as the rhino charged at a group of conservation activists who were working on camera trapping for the on-going tiger census. “As per the preliminary report, guard Ganesh Pegu first fired one shot in the air to scare away the charging female rhino. But when the rhino continued to charge and reached closer to the vehicle in which the conservationists were travelling,he fired again. The bullet hit the rhino,” Gogoi said.

The incident occurred in Kohora range’s Bokpora camp area. A two-month-old calf, for which the rhino had apparently become more aggressive, has been shifted to the Wildlife Rescue Centre in the vicinity of the park,he said.
