Probe profiling order: MP Christians

The Christian community said that it was giving two more days to the BJP government in the state to find out who ordered the religious profiling of its members.

The Christian community on Tuesday said that it was giving two more days to the BJP government in the state to find out who ordered the religious profiling of its members, before seeking a probe by a Central agency. The state government had last week withdrawn a circular that had ordered the police to collect details of the community and its institutions, besides finding criminal antecedents of its members, the political patronage they enjoy and their sources of income.

Archbishop Dr Leo Carnelio said the state governments probe should include: at whose instance the order was issued; the police officers involved in the process; the purpose behind collecting the details.

While withdrawing the circular, the state government had claimed that it had been issued inadvertently and there was no intention to profile the community. However, the community is not convinced, saying it doubted if there would be a fair probe into a matter like this. The Archbishop alleged that since the BJP came to power in MP,more than 100 attacks on Christians have been reported. On the one hand attackers were either let off or booked for minor offences,on the other,Christians were charged with converting people … Are we second class citizens that we are treated like this?, he alleged.
