Amjad Ahmed,a 23-year-old BSc student of Wadia College and a talented volleyball player from Sudan, and Reliance Communications employee Atul Ganpat Anap (30) succumbed to injuries on Saturday taking the toll in Pune’s German Bakery blast to 13.

Ahmed’s family, which is now in Pune, will take his body to Khartoum for the last rites. Doctors had earlier amputated both the legs of Ahmed, who had been admitted to the ICU with second-degree burns. Ahmed’s mother had come to Pune immediately after hearing about the blast. “This is a shock for the family. His legs were amputated and we were waiting for him to recover. However, his death was completely unexpected,as the doctors had said he was responding to treatment. We are shocked. His mother is in a bad state and not ready to come and see her son,” said Altyeb Shaigoog,Ahmed’s uncle.

“On the day of the blast,I was waiting for him in my flat as he had promised to be there by 7.30 pm. We had planned a combined study as our internal exams had started. He did not turn up and by 8 pm,I got to know he was in German Bakery with his friend Anas AlFatih when the blast occurred,” said Bona Malual,Ahmed’s classmate, also from Sudan. AlFatih is critical and on ventilator support.

Meanwhile,Atul’s wife Rita, who was also injured in the blast, has not yet been told that her husband is dead. Rita was taken off the ventilator, but is still in the ICU. Atul’s mother and his sister, who arrived at the hospital, had to be sedated as they were unable to bear the trauma. His father Ganpat is also in shock.

“When Atul’s condition became critical,we called his father and informed him this morning. Metals and other foreign objects were found in the body. The infection had spread,it was getting difficult to curtail it,” doctors said.

Atul and Rita had come to Pune from Nerul in Navi Mumbai, where they lived, for Rita’s job interview with a leading IT company last Saturday. “They were to return the same day. They must have stopped at the bakery for a meal,” said a relative.

Atul’s father is involved in agri-business in Mumbai. Atul was his eldest son. He has a younger brother and sister.
