The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is all set to take over the probe into the alleged murder of a police officer in Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan.
SHO Phool Mohammad was burnt to death by a mob in March this year inside his official vehicle. Mohammad, who was described as a gutsy cop by his colleagues, was trying to save the life of a protester who jumped from a water tank and later died.
Officials said a CBI team, including forensic experts,is likely to visit Sawai Madhopur in connection with the case which will be registered within a couple of days. The agency has taken up the investigation into the case on the request of the state government.
The state government has been under pressure from certain Muslim organisations demanding an independent probe into the matter.
According to the police,on March 17,two men climbed the water tank and threatened to jump from it if the police did not arrest the killers of an elderly woman in Sudwal village whose legs had been chopped off during a robbery on February 25.
The police, with the help of locals, managed to convince one of them who agreed to give up the protest but the second person, identified as Rajesh Meena, jumped from the tank. The SHO of the area tried to rescue Meena. The mob which had gathered there torched the jeep in which the SHO was sitting.
