Rape-murder: Samples collected for DNA test

“We have obtained samples. We are planning to send it to Hyderabad or any other laboratory that will give us the report at the earliest,” said IG(CID) PN Tiwari on Tuesday

Nearly six months after The Indian Express first reported that the Chhattisgarh Police was considering DNA tests of 25 policemen accused of rape-murder of a minor tribal girl, their blood samples have finally been taken.

“We have obtained samples. We are planning to send it to Hyderabad or any other laboratory that will give us the report at the earliest,” said IG(CID) PN Tiwari on Tuesday. Explaining the reason for the delay,he said: “The consent of the policemen had to be obtained.”

According to the police,15-year-old Meena Khalkho was killed in an “encounter with Naxals” on July 6 in Chando village of Balrampur district. Home Minister Nanki Ram Kanwar had said the girl was “habitual about sex”. However, locals as well as Dr R S Markam, who conducted the autopsy, had refuted the police claim.
