Rathore tried to influence me for favourable report: Ex-CBI officer

A former CBI Joint Director has alleged that Rathore tried to influence him and the Investigating Officer into filing 'a favourable report'.

In a twist to the row over the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case involving former Haryana DGP S P S Rathore,a former Joint Director of the CBI,who was handling the case,on Sunday alleged that Rathore tried to influence him and the Investigating Officer (IO) into filing a favourable report.

R M Singh, who was CBI Joint Director in 1998 and retired in 2001,told The Indian Express: He (Rathore) came to my room (at the CBI office in the CGO complex in New Delhi) several times during 1998 and asked me to make a report in his favour. He wanted to be cleared of all charges.

When contacted,Rathore declined comment on Singhs remarks. He said he and his wife, who is also his counsel in the case, had decided not to speak to the media.

Singh claimed Rathore had learnt that he was constructing a house in Gurgaon. He offered to help me with construction of my house. He used to say why dont you tell me,I will get you building material and other things, Singh alleged.

He said he was not aware initially that the IO too had been approached. When we discussed the case,I came to know that he (Rathore) had also approached the IO for favourable changes in the investigation.

Asked why hadnt he informed the CBI Director about Rathore,Singh said: I had already told Mr Rathore not to repeat this, that this was not going to help him. So I did not inform the Director. We had given our report as per our investigation… The file later goes for a legal opinion.

Singh claimed he had recommended charges of molestation, abetment to suicide and forgery against Rathore.

I dont know what happened later because the file was not with me. We did a proper investigation and gave a fair report… After we filed the report,he complained to the Director against me,saying I had asked him for money… Rathore had access to everyone,my office in CBI… also because he was the state DGP, said Singh.
