In the first move signalling thaw in ties with Islamabad,New Delhi on Monday proposed dates in the last week of March for a meeting between the Home Secretaries of the two countries.

The Indian government suggested two sets of dates — March 21-22 and March 28-29 — to the Pakistani side.

The Home Secretaries had last met in June 2010 in Islamabad, when Home Minister P Chidambaram had visited Pakistan for a SAARC Home Ministers’ meeting. Chidambaram and Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik spoke to each other last week over the Rahat Fateh Ali Khan issue as well.

A senior official said on Monday India would demand parity with Islamabad on the latter’s demand to send a judicial commission to India for the 26/11 Mumbai attack probe.

Sources said the Indian government could ask the Pakistan government to allow a team from India to visit that country to question LeT terrorists such as Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi in connection with the 26/11 attacks and get voice samples of the masterminds who were guiding the attackers in Mumbai. The government is also considering getting a court order to facilitate the visit.

The sources said India will also ask Pakistan during the Home Secretary-level talks to take effective steps to dismantle the fake currency machinery in that country, which is being used to print and circulate fake Indian currency.

Recently, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had arrested some foreign nationals along with fake Indian currency, something that established the Pakistan link to the fake currency racket.
