With Islamabad yet to respond to New Delhis request to send Sarabjit Singh to India for the best available treatment,India has asked Pakistan to consider shifting him to a third country for proper medical treatment.
Indian high commissioner Sharat Sabharwal conveyed this to Pakistan foreign secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani at a meeting on Wednesday.
Pakistani diplomatic sources in Islamabad told PTI that they were positively considering Indias request to repatriate him. But both the Ministry of External Affairs and the Pakistani high commission in New Delhi said they had not been informed about this.
The MEA Wednesday said this is not the time for invoking legal and bureaucratic reasons for not taking the right steps to save a human life. By evening,Pakistan agreed to Indias request for consular access to Sarabjit once a day.
Reports from Pakistan said Sarabjit had slipped into non-reversible coma,which could lead to brain death.
MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said,We are concerned… Our high commissioner has met the Pakistan foreign secretary and urged the Pakistan government to immediately release him on humanitarian and sympathetic grounds so that he can benefit from the best available treatment in India.
Sarabjits sister,wife and two daughters,who returned from Pakistan during the day,arrived in New Delhi late in the evening to meet the Prime Minister,Sonia Gandhi and other leaders.
I will tell the Prime Minister with folded hands that I have doubts about the treatment being given to Sarabjit in Pakistan, Sarabjits sister Dalbir Kaur said. She said she would fast until Sarabjit was shifted out of Pakistan.
