Jessie J,the newest English singer and
songwriter,on her journey from singing in a school choir to releasing her debut album Who You Are
How difficult was the process of releasing your debut album,Who You Are?
The way I see it is that as soon as I was signed and I started writing for my debut album, until the second it got released,I was still writing for it. I never stopped and kind of tried harder for the album even when I wasnt writing. For me,as an artiste youre working to put out your first debut album,so whatever youre doing,it goes towards that. And so for six years Ive been writing towards it,and Big white room,Stand up,Mamma knows best the three songs that I wrote six years ago they carried on through to this album. So I dont think the consistency ever stopped. I wanted it to be as strong as it could over six years.
You had a great response for your singles Do it like a dude and Price tag. Did that help the album?
Price tag and Do it like a dude,I think, were so different and it was a risk to start off the album with Do it like a dude. And I wanted to do Price tag and then move on to Nobodys perfect. I want to kind of slowly but surely give a little more. I want people to still feel like theyre discovering little gems and mysteries about me. I dont want to give everything away.
Which songs are you partial to in the album? Why?
I feel Who you are,the title-track,glued the album together and gave it a kind of purpose. And for me the album title represents exactly what I wanted the album to be about, which is be true to being who you are and the kind of difficulties you go through in life. My album for me is a representation of what I have seen in the last six years of my life. I have kind of written songs about stuff thats personal to me to which I know other people can relate.
A little bit about yourself: You were in a school choir. Did you always want to be a singer?
Initially,I wanted to get into acting until I knew that I could sing. Yes,I was in the school choir. I love singing and writing is everything for me,and as soon as Im feeling a certain way,I want to write a song about it.
What types of songs and emotions you feel best describe you?
The songs on my album Who You Are describe me. Each song on this album expresses different emotions and gives out a different message.
Youve received praise from some of the best people in the business including Justin Timberlake. How does that help and motivate you?
It is motivating and Im very happy that artistes from the industry like my music and my songs.
