In its wish list to the finance ministry for the upcoming Budget, the steel ministry has asked that the 30 per cent export duty on iron ore should not be rolled back while it wants import duty on the mineral abolished given its acute shortage.
The ministry has also asked for removing import duties on silica, stainless steel scrap, manganese ore and chrome ore to lessen the input costs on the steel industry.
… the suggestion is to abolish the 2.5 per cent import duty on iron ore. This is a sort of endorsing a growing perception that India may become a net importer of iron ore, a source told The Indian Express.
The ministry has pitched for eliminating the 5 per cent import duty on non-coking coal a long-pending demand of the steel industry.
The steel makers would be keenly watching if their demand to make steel supply to shipyards tax free.
The producers would also be expecting some sops from the government.
