Mounting an attack on her rivals in the state and at the Centre over the continuing attacks on local fishermen,AIADMK general secretary and opposition leader J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday called them an indication of the weak and ineffective leadership of the country.
The Indian government is weak. The Prime Minister is weak and ineffective, Jaya told the media outside the residence of N Jayakumar, the latest victim to allegedly be killed by the Sri Lankan Navy,at Pushpavanam in Nagapattinam on Wednesday. The audacious attacks by the Lankan Navy on fishermen, despite Indias obvious military superiority, have been because of that, she added.
The root cause of the present trouble was ceding Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka under an accord in 1974,which was not ratified by the Parliament and is thus illegal. Retrieval of the island is necessary to solve the issue, she said, adding that the petition that she moved to annul it,is pending in the Supreme Court.
Charging that Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was interested only in furthering the interests of his own family,Jaya asked the community members to vote her back into power to guarantee their own safety.
Ahead of the Assembly polls, attacks on fishermen is once again becoming a significant issue in the state, prompting Jaya to call on N Jayakumars family.
She handed over a financial aid of Rs one lakh to Jayakumars widow Murugeshwari and assured the family support for the education of their two girls, aged two and six months.
Following clear indications that her plans of forming an alliance with the Congress will not materialise, she has renewed her attacks on its leadership.
