Punjab CM gets women bodyguards

Some 20 women commandos are set to be deployed in the Close Protection Team,or the inner security ring,of Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal and his son, deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal. Trained for a month at the Punjab Police Commando Training Complex in Bahadurgarh, the women did strenuous physical exercises and were taught to use sophisticated weapons for combat. Krav Maga, the Israeli martial art,was also part of the curriculum for the women, who will first be posted at the CM’s office and residence, before being assigned active duty.

Badal and his son are following the footsteps of the late Libyan president,Muammar Gaddafi, who also had an elite team of women bodyguards. The Punjab Police has recruited 60 women — all not less than 5 feet 7 inches tall — for the job of protecting the Badals. Even as the first batch of 20 women commandos prepares to join duty, the next batch of 20 is already training at Bahadurgarh.

A Punjab Police officer said that women recruits are expected to be “mentally tougher and more disciplined, and have better intuition” than their male counterparts.
