Thousands march in Karachi to support blasphemy laws,Qadri

Shouting anti-government slogans,thousands of people on Sunday marched here in Pakistan’s financial capital to oppose any amendments in the controversial blasphemy laws and praised the man charged with killing Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer who dubbed it as “black law”.

Those at the rally also protested former minister Sherry Rehman who wants changes in the blasphemy law. Several clerics have issued fatwas against her. Media reports said the imam of Sultan Masjid,one of Karachi’s biggest mosques,declared Rehman ‘wajib-ul-qatl’ (fit to be killed).

The rally was attended by Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan chief Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman and Jamaat-e-Islami chief Syed Munawwar Hasan. Jamaat-ud-Dawah’s chief Hafiz Saeed,scheduled to be at the rally,did not turn up. However,senior JuD leader Qari Ahsaan was present at the rally.


Hunt on for cleric who prompted killing

ISLAMABAD: A Elite Force policeman attached to Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani’s security detail has been detained along with an official of the country’s electronic media watchdog in connection with Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer’s assassination,while investigators are looking for a cleric who motivated the killing,Dawn reported. Mumtaz Qadri,the assassin,attended a meet on December 31 in Rawalpindi,where the cleric,identified only as ‘QH’,gave a speech on blasphemy. Qadri met the cleric and discussed with him the issue of killing people committing blasphemy. When Qadri asked the cleric how blasphemers should be dealt with,he encouraged him to kill them,sources said.
