TN govt may delete references to Karunanidhi in school books

Moves are on to remove the anthem for the World Classical Tamil Conference penned by Karunanidhi.

Within days of taking charge, the J Jayalalithaa government in Tamil Nadu has initiated the steps to cleanse textbooks of references to former chief minister M Karunanidhi.

Though officials are tightlipped, sources said moves are on to remove the anthem for the World Classical Tamil Conference penned by Karunanidhi that appears in all text-books prepared by the government. These text-books are yet to be distributed. A work by Karunanidhi in pure Tamil and the logo of the World Classical Tamil Conference, the pet project of the DMK president that was boycotted by AIADMK,are likely to be removed.

Rumours about the deletion began making the rounds when School Education Minister C Ve Shanmugam held a meeting with senior government officials who are in charge of textbooks.

But the minister denied the rumour. I have not received any instructions from my leader regarding this. There has not been any discussions in this regard.

However, party sources indicated the references would be removed ahead of the coming academic year.
