‘Catch them young’ has been the mantra of recruiters worldwide. So the Army is now taking it to the classrooms. For the first time, the NCERT has allowed advertisements in its textbooks, starting this academic session, following an Army request.

Full-page advertisements of the Army will be on the opening pages of five Class XI textbooks — Creative Writing & Translation,Computers and Communication Technology,Human Ecology and Family Sciences and the Indian Heritage & Craft and Graphic Designing textbooks.

Students in mind, the advertisements showcase the Army as a path to “An extraordinary life. A Life full of adventure, honour and glory”.

“The Army approached NCERT last year with this request. Facing manpower shortage, they felt the advertisements could help recruit youngsters. A Parliamentary committee was also said to have made similar recommendations. So the NCERT decided to allow these advertisements free of cost. We will try and include them in more textbooks next year,” said B C Patro,NCERT spokesperson.
