In a little respite to the strained American labour market, the number of claims for unemployment benefits declined by as much as 13,000 to 6,23,000 for the week ended May 23.
However, the figures for those receiving jobless benefits soared to 6,788,000,the US Labor Department said in a statement on Thursday.
Reeling under the financial turmoil, many American firms have resorted to massive layoffs in recent months and more jobs may be at risk if ailing auto maker General Motors files for bankruptcy.
