A Petition challenging the election of BJP MP from Pilibhit Varun Gandhi was filed in the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday.

The petition sought to cancel the election of Varun on the ground that he allegedly violated the Representation of the People Act and the election code of conduct by spreading communal hatred during his election campaign.

The petition was filed by V M Singh, the Congress candidate who lost to Varun. “My client has moved court on the ground that Varun Gandhi had tried to seek votes by spreading hatred against members of a particular community which amounted to corrupt practice as defined under Section 123 (3) of the Representation of the People Act,” said Singh’s counsel Ravi Shankar Prashad.

Singh told The Indian Express,”I filed the petition so that it acts as a deterrent for others that they should not indulge in creating communal divide in the future.”

Referring to the tapes that showed Varun making a hate speech at an election meeting,Singh said: “He even lied as he gave a wrong affidavit saying that his voice was doctored. He raised a finger at his opponents. Following his statements,Hindu voters did not actually vote for Varun, instead they voted against Muslims.”

Singh further said,”Varun should be debarred for six years from contesting elections like Bal Thackeray was debarred in 1999.”
