Ten days after Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan acted on a complaint received by his office against former chief justice of India K G Balakrishans son-in law P V Sreenijan, the Home Department on Thursday ordered a Vigilance probe into the alleged amassment of wealth by the former Youth Congress leader. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishan issued the necessary orders.

Earlier, the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) was non-committal on conducting the probe on the ground that he did not come under the purview of public servant. But legal circles pointed out the precedents of the VACB probing allegations against persons other than public servants.

The CPMs silence in the allegations against the Youth Congress leader also added to the confusion of the Home Department. However, the government was forced to speed up the process of ordering the probe following continued allegations against Balakrishnans family.
