Visitors on online travel sites up 32%: Study

Number of visitors to online travel sites has surged 32 per cent in the last year to 18.5 million visitors a month as more Indians turned to the web for their travel needs,according to a study by global research firm comScore.

Number of visitors to online travel sites has surged 32 per cent in the last year to 18.5 million visitors a month as more Indians turned to the web for their travel needs,according to a study by global research firm comScore.

According to comScore Media Metrix service,in April,2011,18.5 million online users aged 15 or older visited a travel site from a home or work location as compared to 13.9 million in April,2010.

“The online travel category continues to show strong growth in India… As the online travel industry matures it will be important for brands to provide increasing functionality,ease of use and security to its users to effectively compete in this growing market,” comScore Director India Kedar Gavane said in a statement.

Indian Railways remained the most visited travel site,with 8.3 million people logging onto its website in the reported month as against 7.7 million visitors in April,2010.

MakeMyTrip received 3.8 million visitors,Yatra 3.5 million and ClearTrip.com received 2.1 million viewers in April,2011. US-based Expedia secured the fifth position with 1.8 million visitors.

The numbers excludes visits from public computers such as internet cafes or access from mobile phones or PDAs.
