Indian captain Saurav Ganguly has promised there will be no repeat of the acrimony that marked the 2001 Test series against Australia when his team start their tour there later this month. Ganguly sparked a feud with his Australian counterpart Steve Waugh three years ago after repeatedly arriving late for the toss as India came back to win the Test series 2-1 on the subcontinent. “A lot was made out of it in 2001,” Ganguly told reporters on Tuesday. “They play tough cricket and I also play the hard way. But all that is in the past. We all mature as time goes on. It is time to move ahead, not look back.” Ganguly also sought to bury the hatchet with Waugh ahead of the tour, during which India will play four Tests and a triangular one-day series also featuring Zimbabwe. “I have a lot of regard for Steve,” he said. “Steve is a role model for many cricketers. There was a lot at stake for us both (in 2001). It was an important series for them and it was only the second series for me as captain.” India’s selectors are due to name the Test squad on Thursday, the day after a one-day tri-series game against Australia in Bangalore. Ganguly, who has been out of action for almost a month because of a thigh injury, said he would be back for the match on Wednesday.
