Seeking to capitalise on the situation caused by serial blasts, BJP promised to legislate laws stringent than POTA to curb terrorism in the country if it came to power in the general elections in 2009.
“We cannot fight terror with laws like these. We will form a law stricter than POTA when we come to power,” BJP chief Rajnath Singh said in a rally in New Delhi.
Singh, who was addressing a rally organised by the youth wing (BJYM) of the party, alleged that actions of the government to combat terror was a matter of ‘suspect’ in the present times.
“The UPA government’s actions and its intentions are a matter of suspect for the whole country,” Singh told the youth assembled from across the country for the ‘Yuva Kranti Rally’, coinciding with the launch of the Quit India Movement by Mahatma Gandhi in 1942.
The government seems to favour the forces working against the country. How could they explain not giving enough proofs to the court resulting in the lifting of ban from organisations like SIMI, he said.
“There were some terrorist attacks also while NDA was in power. But in those incidents the security forces were able to shoot down the terrorists due to high moral. Today, even the forces are demoralised by the government,” Singh said.
Addressing the rally, party leader Sushma Swaraj cautioned the Centre to avoid using army to control agitating civilian, threatening ‘dire consequences’.
“Let me caution the government to avoid using army against the agitating civilians. Let me advice them to avoid anything of this sort as it could result in dire consequences,” party general secretary Swaraj said.
