HOBART, JANUARY 14 : Australian Matt Welsh set the first world swimming record of the millennium when he powered home in the final of the 50-metre backstroke at the World Cup short-course 25-metre meet.

Welsh recorded 24.11 seconds to cut 0.01 second off the record set by American Neil Walker in Washington last November. Welsh beat American Lenny Krayzelburg by about half asecond.
