KINGSTON, MARCH 29: The West Indies powered to a 10-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the first session on the final day of the second cricket Test at Sabina Park on Tuesday.

Openers Sherwin Campbell and Adrian Griffith raced past their victory target of 72 well before lunch after the home side resumed at eight without loss.

Both played extravagant strokes as they set about the Zimbabwean attack.

Griffith scored an unbeaten 54 which included 11 fours and came from just 38 balls. He smashed four fours from a Bryan Strang over and Campbell (16 not out) then hit Trevor Gripper to the boundary in the 13th over to take his side to 75 for no wicket and secure the victory.

The win followed Monday’s celebrations for Courtney Walsh’s record 435th Test wicket and the 2-0 series win is the first for Jimmy Adams’ team since the West Indies beat England 3-1 in the Caribbean in 1998.

Walsh’s dismissal of Henry Olonga not only marked a new bowling peak but also completed the second-innings demolition of Zimbabwe for 102.

Before Walsh and his pace partners went to work on Zimbabwe’s batting, Jimmy Adams celebrated his appointment as West Indies captain by completing a century.

Adams made an unbeaten 101 as his team totaled 339 to gain a first-innings lead of 31. His sixth Test century came off 373 balls and included six fours.

The left-hander, a picture of patience throughout his dogged 507-minute innings, was given great support in an eighth-wicket partnership of 147 by fast-bowler Franklyn Rose, who made 69.

It was Rose’s second-highest first-class score and his best at Sabina Park. He hit 11 fours and faced 179 balls. The pair broke the 26-year-old West Indies eighth-wicket record of 124, between Sir Vivian Richards and the late Keith Boyce.
