JOHANNESBURG, Nov 28: The man responsible for murdering an Indian human rights doctor in 1989 has claimed that Winnie Madikizela-Mandela had ordered the murder.
In a radio interview broadcast here yesterday, Cyril Mbatha alleged that Winnie ordered the murder of Dr Abubaker Asvat after the latter advised that 14-year-old Stompie Mokhetsi Seipei be taken to hospital for treatment.
The youth, he said, was assaulted at the home of the former ‘“Mother of the Nation” after he and other youths had been abducted from a Methodist church home. The youth had been taken to Asvat for treatment. Mbatha said Winnie Mandela had also given him the gun with which to shoot and kill Asvat. He said she had promised to pay him US$6,000. Mbatha is to give evidence before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) about the assassination of Asvat at his Soweto clinic seven years ago.
Mbatha, who is serving a 30-year jail term for the murder, has applied to the TRC for amnesty. The statement comes at a time when prominent ANC leaders have given damaging evidence against Winnie before the TRC.
