First things first; it’s a pleasure being here in Lahore without the security cover we got when we were here last for the Pakistan leg of our Test series. Things are a lot better, a lot more relaxed, and that makes the atmosphere a lot more conducive to playing hockey.

We had a good workout earlier today and we are really, really happy with what we have here. Our first match is on Saturday against Spain and since we just played Spain over the past week, we know what to expect. The good thing for us is that we won the second Test after losing the first. So we are on even terms. Of course, anything can happen in the match. But as far as we are concerned, the pressure is minimal as we know the strengths and weaknesses of our opponents.

One bit of disadvantage, however, is the slippery grass. It’s a new truf they have laid and it is quite slippery. As the meet progresses, I am sure things will get smoother, but in our first match, things might be a bit tough.

Looking back a bit, I think this is the youngest team we have ever brought to a Champions Trophy. But let me also add, that this is probably the team with the best coordination and energy that I have been part of, whether as a coach or as player. I foresee great things for this lot.

Australian coach Terry Walsh said recently that people should watch out for this Indian side. Pakistan’s Roeland Oeltmans has also expressed similar sentiments. And the response we have got since coming here and mingling with the other teams also suggests that people are excited about seeing this Indian side.

Also, since coming here, a lot of people have asked us about the Premier Hockey League that was launched recently and there have been a lot of queries about that. The players in this Indian team will be involved in the PHL as well, and so that’s added to the interest.

As for our first match — against Spain — it is of utmost importance for us to pull off a win. I think we have a great chance of winning, simply because we know their game so well now. What happens in the Champions Trophy is that because there are just six teams, if you win two games, you are assured of a place in the semi-finals. That’s what we will be looking to do: win against Spain and then have an easier time in the next four games.

To do that though, our boys have to play really, really well. Penalty corners will again be of paramount importance. Sandeep Singh has converted a few in recent times and we will hope that he can continue the good work.
